On the 13th, National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik urged President Yoon Seok-yeol, who has the power to appoint, to make a responsible decision regarding the appointment of Kim Hyung-seok, the new director of the Independence Hall of Korea, who has been embroiled in controversy over his New Right view of history.

On the morning of that day, Speaker Woo released a statement titled “Statement by the Speaker of the National Assembly on the 79th Anniversary of Liberation Day” and stated, “Ahead of Liberation Day, there has been serious division of public opinion and conflict,” and “Eventually, organizations that promote independence activists, including the Gwangbokhoe, comprised of descendants of independence activists, declared that they would not participate in the Liberation Day celebration.”

He continued, “This is an unprecedented and truly grave situation,” and said, “The president must step forward.”

Chairman Woo told President Yoon, “Liberation Day should not be made into a day of conflict and division. It should not remain a divided celebration,” and demanded, “You should humbly reflect on why the people are worried, critical, and angry about a series of events.”

Meanwhile, regarding the new director of the Independence Hall of Korea, Kim Hyung-seok, they said, “Despite the explanation from the person concerned, doubts remain as to whether the new director has a historical awareness appropriate to the purpose of the establishment of the hall,” and urged, “Since the appointee has refused to voluntarily resign, the president, who has the power to appoint, should make the decision to terminate him.”

He also requested, “The government must clearly state its position on the controversy surrounding the promotion of National Foundation Day, which insults the independence movement and damages the identity of the country.”

He also said that the government’s agreement to register the Sado Mine as a World Heritage Site was “completely unacceptable,” adding that “as a government that was a victim of illegal colonial rule and forced labor, it must pledge and promise to respond appropriately.”

Chairman Woo repeatedly emphasized, “Respect for independence activists and the history of the independence movement is not a matter of left or right. It is the identity of the Republic of Korea,” and “We cannot move forward toward a future-oriented Korea-Japan relationship without reflecting on the past. The president and the government must answer responsibly.”

Meanwhile, the six opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, have agreed not to attend the Liberation Day celebration ceremony hosted by the government on the 15th. It has been reported that Speaker Woo is struggling to decide whether to attend the celebration ceremony, considering that he is one of the three key figures representing the legislative branch.
