Speaker Woo Won-shik criticized President Yoon Seok-yeol for not attending the opening ceremony of the 22nd National Assembly. The opening ceremony, which took place 96 days after the start of the 22nd National Assembly term, was recorded as the longest-attended opening ceremony. When Speaker Woo, who is from the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized President Yoon for not attending, the seats of the Democratic Party and other opposition parties erupted in applause, while the People Power Party members did not applaud.
The 22nd National Assembly was originally scheduled to hold its opening ceremony on July 5, but due to the prolonged standoff between the ruling and opposition parties, the schedule was postponed further than the 21st National Assembly, which held its opening ceremony 48 days after the start of its term.
In his 30-minute opening speech, Speaker Woo said, “If one of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches exercises excessive power or power is concentrated, the separation of powers will collapse and the people’s rights will be violated,” and added, “Even if it is a bit inconvenient, we should listen to each other’s stories. The first priority for both the National Assembly and the government is public sentiment. The government’s path to success is to listen to the voice of the National Assembly, which is most in touch with public sentiment.”
He emphasized the need to resolve livelihood issues, and proposed a social dialogue involving the ruling and opposition parties, the government, medical professionals, and patients, saying, “The medical vacuum caused by the conflict between the National Assembly and the National Assembly has continued for six months.” At that time, only the opposition party members responded with applause, while the ruling party members showed no response. When Speaker Woo mentioned the need for constitutional amendment, political reform, and pension reform, the ruling party seats were silent. When he proposed to review the relaxation of the requirements for forming a parliamentary negotiating group, only the members of the Fatherland Innovation Party who agreed applauded, while the members of the People Power Party and the Democratic Party remained silent.
After the opening ceremony and the regular session opening ceremony, the speaker and the ruling and opposition party lawmakers gathered on the steps in front of the National Assembly building to take a commemorative photo. The front row was occupied by the speaker, the National Assembly standing committee chairs, and the leaders of each party, and the ruling and opposition party lawmakers stood side by side, holding hands, and shouted “cooperation” instead of “kimchi” as the moderator instructed. The lawmakers also created a friendly atmosphere, such as when they applauded Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Soo-jin, who was injured during the friendly soccer match between ruling and opposition party lawmakers, when she appeared in a wheelchair.
