DECRYPTION – The executive is banking on biomass as an alternative to hydrocarbons for heating, running machines, driving and flying. But resources are limited.

Not a week goes by without a new use of biomass emerging in France or Europe. Whether it is converting coal-fired power plants to consume rapeseed oil, flying planes with fuel made from waste oil, heating with wood, producing gas with agricultural residues or dedicated crops: the list of possibilities is growing regularly.

This enthusiasm has seen a significant boost since the start of the war in Ukraine. And, in recent times, other events – the increase in the price of petroleum products and the risks of embraces in the Middle East – have reinforced interest in biomass, these organic materials that can be transformed into energy.
