Double Shooting at Worcester State University Leaves One Dead, One Injured

WORCSTER – Worcester State University was placed on lockdown after a double shooting occurred near a campus parking garage at 2:30 Saturday morning. Sadly, one person was pronounced dead, while another was injured.

State Police are currently conducting an investigation into the incident, which took place at the university. According to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, neither the victims nor the suspected assailants are enrolled as students at Worcester State University.

Authorities have determined that the shooting was the result of a fight and not an active shooter situation. “This does not appear to be a random incident,” stated Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early during a press conference held on Saturday. “The parties involved knew each other from what we can ascertain at this point.” One suspect has been apprehended in connection with the shooting.

The safety of students and faculty members was prioritized during the incident, with the university asking students to remain in their residence halls until the shelter-in-place order was lifted just before 9:30 a.m. However, individuals are still advised to stay away from the area where police are currently working. The Wasylean parking lot will remain closed until further notice.

As a result of the shooting, all weekend activities at Worcester State University, including homecoming and family weekend, have been canceled. The university is providing counseling services to students who require support during this difficult time.

In a Twitter announcement, Worcester State University confirmed that the campus would be closed on Saturday, October 28th, due to the ongoing incident. Additionally, all university events, both on and off-campus, have been canceled.

The two victims injured in the shooting were transported to UMass Medical Center, but tragically, one of them succumbed to their injuries. The identities of the victims have not been released.

Police are urging anyone with photos or videos of the Wasylean parking lot and Sheehan Hall to come forward and assist with their investigation.
