…
Today’s Wordle answer (game #1478) is ATRIA.
A Surprisingly Obscure Word
“Hello, and welcome to the latest instalment of ‘The NYT has added a word and it’s needlessly obscure,’” one analyst noted. ATRIA is a word many players may not have encountered before. While “atrium” is a familiar term, and “atrial” is known in a medical context (such as “atrial fibrillation”), ATRIA itself is less common.
Interestingly, the solution is a plural – a relatively rare occurrence in Wordle, though not entirely unheard of. As evidenced by the puzzle #439 answer, FUNGI, Wordle does accept plurals beyond those formed by simply adding “S” or “ES.”
The difficulty of this Wordle is reflected in the average score of 3.9. The expert player scored a 4, which could have been a 3. The WordleBot achieved a score of 3, with a skill score of 63 and a luck score of 74. The initial word, OUTGO, left 357 possibilities, while WordleBot’s starting word, CRANE, narrowed it down to 80. Tomorrow’s suggested starting word is NOSEY.
The challenge stemmed from a fortunate, yet unhelpful, second guess. Playing STARE after OUTGO immediately reduced the possibilities to a single answer. However, the player didn’t recognize it, leading to a frustrating search for the solution. After several attempts, including ACRID, the answer was finally deduced.

Yesterday’s Wordle Hints (Game #1477)
For those in a different time zone still tackling yesterday’s puzzle (July 5, 2024), here are some clues for Wordle #1477:

- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was B.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was R.

Yesterday’s Solution: BALER
Some days present a particularly difficult challenge, and yesterday was one of those days. “I mean, come on, BALER! BALER? BALER. When did you last use that word in a sentence?” one commentator remarked.
The average score for yesterday’s puzzle was 4.7, indicating a high level of difficulty. The expert player managed a score of 4, aided by a lucky starting word, CLAMP, which revealed a yellow L and A. Following up with STEAL uncovered an E. Despite these initial clues, the solution remained elusive until the player played LARGE, which narrowed the possibilities to a single answer.
The expert player noted that while BALER is an uncommon word, it’s frequently used by farmers, a demographic likely underrepresented among Wordle players.
