On December 9th, 2023, the Erding Health Department organized a youth film day at the Cineplex cinema to educate more than 250 young people about the immune deficiency disease on World AIDS Day.

The event featured the screening of films “Same Same But Different” and “Themba” for students from ninth grade onwards. The young audience also had access to information about anonymous and free advice, HIV testing options, and a “condom driving license” from the district office’s social educators and a doctor from the health department.

District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer emphasized the importance of the event, stating that while advances in medical treatment have transformed an HIV infection from a death sentence to a manageable condition, there is still a risk of neglecting protection and prophylaxis.

The report highlighted that despite medical advances, AIDS has claimed 40 million lives worldwide since its emergence in 1981. In Bavaria alone, 12,000 people carry the HIV virus, with 200 new infections reported annually. Although AIDS is no longer necessarily fatal, 70 infected individuals died in Bavaria in 2021.

The event was an important opportunity for young people to learn about AIDS, its impact, and access to essential resources for testing and prevention. The Erding Health Department’s initiative is a step towards raising awareness and fighting the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS.]
