Stratospheric! Already world champion in the 100m, Noah Lyles won the 200m on Friday in Budapest. By signing a time of 19″52, the American beat his compatriot Erriyon Knighton and the young Batswana Letsile Tebogo. He won his third title over the distance, after his coronations in Doha in 2019 and in Eugene in 2022.
Noah Lyles, 26, had come to Hungary with the aim of achieving the 100m-200m double and had succeeded in the first part of his challenge by winning on the straight in 9″83 last Sunday. He was ahead of Letsile Tebogo, 20, and Briton Zharnel Hughes, third and fourth respectively on Friday.
First 100m-200m double since Bolt in 2015
Achieving this double at the World Championships is a first since Usain Bolt in 2015. At the time, the Jamaican had won the 100m in 9″79 and the 200m in 19″55, each time ahead of the ‘American Justin Gatlin.
King of the sprint in these Worlds, Noah Lyles will logically be one of the favorites in Paris in a year during the Olympic Games. But before leaving Budapest, he will have one last title to go for on Saturday, that of the 4 x 100 m relay. The Americans posted the best time in the playoffs this Friday in 37″67.
