Did you know that February 17th is World Cat Day? Pussies are so special to us that they still have several other commemorative dates, such as International Cat Day (August 8th) and National Black Cat Day (November 9th).
Furthermore, according to research by Instituto Pet Brasil, the population of felines raised at home was the one that recorded the greatest growth in the country between 2020 and 2021: there was a 6% increase in this period. In fact, according to the latest census by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), there are approximately 22.1 million cats in Brazilian homes.
Full of their own quirks and characteristics, felines are so complex that they equally stand out when it comes to myths and truths. Surely you, or someone you already know, have questioned actions such as: “why do cats purr?” or “why do cats hide their feces?” It is also worth remembering the legends surrounding these animals, such as the bad luck that black cats supposedly bring, which has already been denied by several experts.
Even though they are disliked by some, cats have true worshipers, the so-called “gateiros”. In fact, an example of this passion are the recent establishments called “Cat Café”. As the name suggests, you can enjoy a good cappuccino while petting a group of felines on site. Furthermore, the pet market, especially cats, grows every year and the expectation is that this niche will continue to grow.

Well, when it comes to cats, there’s no shortage of things to talk about. Like this, we interviewed Marcela Becker, founder and vice-president of the Ampara Animal Institute. Throughout our conversation, she gave details about the work carried out at the organization, founded in 2010 and focused on animal protection in Brazil.
