DISPATCH — September 16 is “world clean up day”, initiated by the World CleanUp Day association. For the occasion, thousands of participatory cleaning actions will be organized, and everyone will be invited to pick up the waste that accumulates in the street, on the way to school or in public parks.

The participatory collection operation on thousands of sites is being carried out for the sixth consecutive year in France, in the days preceding or following September 16.

Last year, nearly 15 million volunteers got involved in 190 countries. In France, more than 1,000 tonnes of waste were collected by 170,000 volunteers in five regions (Occitanie, Hauts-de-France, Pays-de-Loire, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and in the departments of Overseas), reports the World CleanUp Day association.

This year, from the Aude ponds to the southern districts of Lille, more than 1,800 participatory cleaning actions are planned in France. There are many around campus, most of them ultra-local, in a parking lot, on the banks of a river, on a beach or around a village. All actions are listed on the association’s website.

This global movement was born in Estonia in 2007, with the “Let’s do it World” association. It quickly developed into national associations and today it “belongs to everyone”. “These are small steps that challenge those who do not collect” and “those who emit more and more packaging”, Laurence Divisia, one of the regional ambassadors of the operation, in charge of the Ile-de- France.

“The idea of this operation is to get waste out of nature, sort it into the right recycling channels, but also raise awareness of the fact that there is too much packaging and waste,” she adds. .

On Thursday, an emblematic operation takes place in the La Défense business district, where companies organize collection operations, followed by weighing and sorting.
