World Cup 2022: banned, Russia withdraws its appeal to the CAS

Dismissed from the Qatari World Cup (November 21-December 18) by FIFA, Russia had filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport to challenge this decision. The CAS announced Tuesday that the Russian Federation has backtracked, enacting the definitive banishment of its selection.

It is definitely recorded now, Russia will not participate in the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year. The Russian Football Federation withdrew its appeal on March 30 against FIFA’s decision to ban its selection from international competitions, thus accepting its exclusion from the 2022 World Cup (November 21-December 18), the Court of Arbitration for Sport announced on Tuesday. “The procedure will be closed shortly”, specifies the CAS in a press release, while Russian football suffered a first setback on March 18, when the sports jurisdiction refused to suspend the FIFA sanctions, taken after the invasion. Russian in Ukraine, pending a decision on the merits.

The Russian selection, quarter-finalist of the 2018 World Cup organized at home, was therefore unable to participate in the play-offs at the end of March for the Qatari tournament, leaving Poland to win their ticket to Doha, at the expense of Sweden (2-0) in the final round.

The Russian federation, however, maintains its procedure against UEFA, which has banned its clubs and selections from European competitions, while its women’s team still hopes to participate in Euro 2022 this summer in England (July 6-31). “No procedural timetable has been established for the moment”, however warns the CAS.

In addition, the sports jurisdiction recorded a cascade of new procedures against the sanctions taken by the sports bodies after the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army. The Russian skating, biathlon, rowing, rugby and gymnastics federations are thus contesting the exclusion of their athletes from international competitions, specifies the CAS.
