World Cup: restricted hours for the sale of alcohol in Qatar

by time news

In Qatar, there should be no beer in stadiums. To buy an alcoholic drink, supporters will have to go outside, during restricted hours. No alcohol during the matches, but a defined purchase time before and after the matches.

The terms are still under discussion, but the sale of alcohol will therefore be limited, around the stadiums as in certain fan zones. As for VIP areas, Fifa promises “beers, champagne, wines and spirits” on its site.

Differences by location

Fans should be able to buy beer in the FIFA fan zone at Al Bidda Park in the center of the capital. The 40,000 spectators it will be able to accommodate will still have to comply with restricted hours.

The other entertainment areas, expected to accommodate 1.2 million visitors, will not serve any alcohol. In places where it is authorized, alcohol should only be on sale between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m., several sources told AFP. Faced with the vagueness, Fifa and the Supreme Organizing Committee of the World Cup said they planned announcements “in due time”.

In Qatar, the consumption of alcohol is prohibited in public. At the end of June, a major controversy had emerged around sex outside marriage during the competition. In the country, relations outside marriage are prohibited, but the law is not systematically applied, particularly for tourists. Homosexuality is also illegal in the Emirate.
