First participation, first victory. This Monday evening, Thibault Tricole made French darts history by officially becoming the first Habs to participate in the World Championships. And the Breton celebrated with dignity by winning against the Belgian Mario Vandenbogaerde (3 sets to 1). A splendid victory for the 146th in the world, who savored this moment in front of the lively audience at Alexandra Palace in London.
“I’m very proud, I had a blast,” he declared after his victory. Mario is one of my best friends on the circuit so it was very strange for me and for him. He didn’t play at his best, neither did I. But a victory is a victory. It was the first time for me, for him too. I am very proud to be the winner. It’s a great victory for me but also for the discipline since the media will talk about it. »
Thibault Tricole has actually not shown the full extent of his talent. He even scared himself by missing a doubles to win the first set, which forced him to chase the score. More stable and precise on doubles than his opponent, he nevertheless won the next three sets. However, he will have to increase his level of play and his average of 85.21 points (on 3 darts) if he wants to have a chance of winning in the second round against the Englishman Rob Cross, world champion in 2018 and current 8th player in the world.
“My goal was to win the first match and face Rob Cross,” explained the Frenchman. It’s done, I’m happy. I’ve never met Rob, I know he plays slowly, I’ll have to adapt my pace. But I have nothing to lose so I think I will be better. »
Thibault Tricole has a few days to recover from his emotions and prepare for this big challenge. His second round is scheduled for this Thursday at 4:40 p.m.
