Head of WHO Calls for Ceasefire in Gaza Amid Communications Blackout

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has urgently called for a ceasefire in Gaza, expressing concern over the communications blackout that is hindering the ability of ambulances to reach injured individuals.

In a statement posted on X on Saturday morning, Ghebreyesus emphasized the critical need to establish contact with health facilities and staff. “We are still out of touch with our staff and health facilities. I’m worried about their safety,” he expressed, highlighting the growing dangers faced by healthcare workers in the region.

Ghebreyesus also pointed out that due to the intense bombardment, people are unable to find shelter in Gaza. The escalating violence and lack of protection have created a dire situation for the civilian population.

The WHO’s appeal comes amidst reports of bombardment near the Indonesia and Al Shifa hospitals, causing grave concern for the wellbeing of patients and medical staff. Gaza’s hospitals are already overwhelmed, operating at maximum capacity due to the influx of injuries sustained during weeks of continuous bombardment. The inability to accommodate a significant increase in patients further exacerbates the already precarious situation.

“[The World Health Organization] appeals to all those who have the power to push for a ceasefire to act NOW,” urged Ghebreyesus, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. With lives at stake and limited access to medical care, a halt to the violence is crucial for the survival and wellbeing of the people in Gaza.

The international community has been urged to rally together in finding a swift and peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. The WHO’s call for a ceasefire aligns with the global stance demanding an end to the violence and the protection of innocent lives caught in the crossfire. The spotlight now falls on those with the power to influence change, urging them to take immediate action in bringing about a cessation of hostilities in Gaza.
