World Hockey Rankings: Indian men’s team wins third place

Lausanne: The Indian men’s hockey team finished third in the World Hockey Rankings at the end of the year. This is the highest ranking ever by an Indian men’s team, having won a bronze medal in Olympic hockey after 41 years.

Olympic gold medalists Belgium are second behind India. Australia is in first place. India are followed by the Netherlands in fourth and Germany in fifth, followed by England (6), Argentina (7), New Zealand (8), Spain (9) and Malaysia (10).

Pakistan ranks 18th in the rankings, followed by South Korea at 16th and Japan at 17th. South Korea defeated Japan in the Asian Champions Trophy Hockey, which ended yesterday. India finished third by defeating Pakistan. India beat Japan 6-0 in the group stage and lost 3-5 to Japan in the semifinals.

Despite the all-time high in the men’s rankings, India suffered a slight setback in the women’s rankings. The women’s team dropped one place to ninth in the new rankings.

Among women, the Netherlands tops the list. England are second and Olympic silver medalists Argentina are third. Australia is fourth and Germany is fifth, followed by Spain (6), Belgium (7), New Zealand (8), India (9) and China (10).
