October 10th World Mental Health Day and this year with the motto: Mental health at work. Governments, employers, organizations representing workers and employers and other stakeholders responsible for Health and the safety of workers must work together to help improve mental health at work by applying measures that take into account the views of workers themselves, their representatives and people with direct experience of mental health problems. By investing effort and resources in evidence-based approaches and interventions, we ensure that all workers have the opportunity to thrive at work and in life. We must act today to make the world healthier tomorrow.

Mental health and work are closely related.
Supportive working conditions can improve mental health by providing purpose and stability. Conversely, poor working conditions damage mental well-being by reducing job satisfaction and productivity.
Workers are exposed to risks to their mental health.
Workers are exposed to various risks to their mental health, such as discrimination, poor working conditions or lack of autonomy. Job insecurity and low wages also increase psychosocial risks due to the lack of adequate protection measures.
Consequences for the person.
If left unaddressed, mental health problems can undermine self-esteem, reduce job satisfaction and limit one’s ability to work. But these problems not only affect the affected person, but also their family and carers.
Wider impacts on work and society.
Mental health problems reduce performance, increase absenteeism and lead to staff turnover. Worldwide, depression and anxiety cause the loss of approximately 12 billion days of work each year, with significant social and economic costs.
Stigmatization creates barriers to employment.
Stigmatization and discrimination can discourage people with mental health problems from seeking help or staying employed. Employers can reduce these barriers through training, raising awareness and working with people who have experienced mental health problems.
Help workers develop their potential.
Employers should make appropriate workplace accommodations for people with mental health problems to maintain their productivity and motivation, for example by offering flexible hours, holding regular support meetings and providing a place to store medications.
Train managers to promote mental health.
Employers should train managers to recognize and manage stressors at work so they can effectively support their teams and create a more supportive and healthy work environment.
Public authorities must act and cooperate.
Public authorities, employers and representative professional organizations must cooperate to formulate policies that prevent mental health risks, promote well-being and create supportive working environments that prioritize mental health.
Take care of your mental health.
While public authorities and employers bear the primary responsibility for protecting and promoting mental health at work, we can all take action to promote our well-being. To do this, you can learn techniques to manage stress, monitor your mental health, and, if necessary, ask for help from trusted friends, family, co-workers, or healthcare professionals.
