This September 17, World Patient Safety Day is celebrated with the motto Let’s give patients a voice! to promote safety in health care.

Safety in healthcare is a fundamental right of all patients. However, harm to patients caused by unsafe care is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Therefore, it is necessary to involve patients and their families at all levels of health care to develop safer health systems.

Specifically, the objectives of World Patient Safety Day are:

  • Raise global awareness of the need for active participation of patients, their families and caregivers in all settings and at all levels of health care to improve patient safety.
  • Involve policymakers, healthcare leaders, health and care workers, patient organizations, civil society and other stakeholders in efforts to engage patients and their families of policies and practices for safe health care.
  • Empower patients, and their families, to actively participate in their own health care and in improving health care safety.
  • Advocate for urgent action on patient and family engagement, in line with the Global Action Plan for Patient Safety 2021-2030, endorsed by all partners.
