The exhibition, initially scheduled for 25 April and postponed due to the health emergency, presents in national preview the 139 finalist photos of the prestigious international photojournalism competition which since 1955 awards the best professional photographers every year. The names of the winners of the 2020 edition were announced on April 16 through social networks; the pandemic has not made possible the usual awards ceremony which takes place every year in Amsterdam and which inaugurates the World Press Photo Festival. For this 63rd edition, the jury made up of international experts examined the works of 4,282 photographers from 125 countries for a total of 73,996 images. 44 photographers from 24 countries made it to the final. Also on display, for the first time, is a selection of the iconic photos that have won the Photo of the Year award from 1955 to today. Yasuyoshi Chiba was the winner of the photo of the year with Straight Voice. The shot portrays a young man who, illuminated by his companions’ cell phones, recites poems during a protest calling for a democratic government for Sudan, during a blackout in Khartoum, on June 19, 2019.
