“It’s funny, you had to think about it, you even had to dare,” this Meldois, a former cook, smiled this Saturday afternoon after swallowing a piece of bread spread with Meaux brie. As for this resident of Tancrou (Seine-et-Marne) who is just as greedy as him, there is no doubt: “It really is the best cheese in the world”.

Just behind them, on tables placed end to end at the foot of Meaux Cathedral, was spread a long, very long piece of toast which had just broken a world record. That of the longest “lichette” covered with the Seine-et-Marnaise specialty.

Six months to wait for Guinness registration

A serious matter since the toast was measured by a surveyor, under the guidance of a bailiff present to approve. “I said to myself, they’re never going to make it. 10 m, 20 m, but not 100 m,” said the mayor (LR) Jean-François Copé on the microphone, just before the score fell.

Meaux, Saturday October 14, 2023: Record broken with a Brie toast 100.28 m long.

The giant slice of bread measured exactly 100.28 m, just before being cut by members of the Brotherhood of Brie de Meaux and being tasted by fans, who came in large numbers. To meet this challenge, 150 strings were placed end to end. Without forgetting the 15 wheels of brie provided by different producers of this AOC cheese, brought together by the Brotherhood, co-organizer of the event.

The score will be transmitted to Guinness World Records. It will then take six months to examine the file, before global approval and entry in the Book of Records. Behind this event, there is a reality: “Meaux brie is a tool of attractiveness for tourism”, according to Elena Le Gall, director of Meaux Marne Ourcq Tourisme.
