Sensitize the general population, to break the silence and create a space for expression that overcomes the feeling of guilt. We must show that suicide is a definitive outcome in the face of a problem that may be temporary. Strengthen help resources, such as the 024 telephone service for suicidal behavior (119,000 calls were answered in the first year). Multiply opportunities for people to develop a satisfactory life project. There is no happy world without a vital project. Budget allocation to successfully complete the objectives of the National Mental Health Strategy and the 2030 Agenda in terms of health and well-being. Investing in mental health is caring for the purpose of life. And finally, creation of home support and accompaniment teams to animate the day-to-day life of the elderly. What less than a gesture of respect to value the testimony of a life. We know that life takes root at the slightest opportunity, and what was once a path of darkness can now be a landscape of beauty and well-being, which deserves to be discovered.

World Suicide Prevention Day 2023 Manifesto

Manifesto prepared by the Committee for Mental Health in the First Person and the State Network of Women of the Confederation of MENTAL HEALTH SPAIN.

On World Suicide Prevention Day we want to look at a difficult and painful reality, and ask a question that will help us understand it: What are we doing wrong as a society to cause 4,000 deaths by suicide every year in Spain?

First of all, the answer is clear. We have ignored the call of the human condition, that is, of all those qualities that one day made us evolve: generosity, disinterested listening, the collaborative spirit.

On the other hand, and although suicide is a multi-causal phenomenon, we know that in many cases a mental health problem appears. This motivates our group to promote a solution, a strategy to get out of emotional isolation.

Undoubtedly, what gives mental health a problem dimension is suffering, the tearing of our inner world.

Therefore, the first step would be to investigate the causes of so much discomfort, of so much hopelessness, which turns the vital experience into something undesirable, into an impossible reading.

We project our image into the future and we fail to recognize ourselves, it seems that the road ends. We become strange people without a project that gives us confidence.

In addition, social stigma stops us from asking for help and asking for help becomes a gesture that requires great strength. Faced with a risk situation we have to connect, open doors, ask liberating questions that help to reconsider.

It is discouraging to see youth without hope, but we want to take advantage of this message to offer a look of understanding and recognition to the elderly. It turns out that 30% of suicides correspond to the age group of people over 65 years of age.

After a life dedicated to opening paths, older people see how ties are broken and face the phenomenon of unwanted loneliness. The cessation of their professional activity or social role, the situation of sudden dependency, or the appearance of a mental health problem, are risk factors when contemplating suicide.

According to these keys, from the Committee for Mental Health in the First Person and the State Network of Women SALUD MENTAL ESPAÑA, we ask for action in several ways:

The reinforcement of specialized psychological care that offers a way out of the labyrinth of confusion. The activation of prevention programs in the educational and labor spheres, which help to redirect discontent with life at an early stage.
