In a press release, ICESCO paid tribute to the crucial role of translators who facilitate civilizational dialogue, understanding and cooperation between nations, and promote the exchange of knowledge between the peoples of the world, in the service of development and common prosperity, as well as peace and security.
“On September 30 of each year, the world celebrates World Translation Day, proclaimed by the United Nations through Resolution No. 71/288 adopted on May 24, 2017, in response to the request of the International Federation of Translators which has commemorated the event since 1991,” recalled the organization.
On this World Day, celebrated this year under the theme “Translation, an art to be protected”, ICESCO also praised the role of translators in the exchange of knowledge between peoples and the promotion of world peace, while allowing the intellectual and creative works of authors around the world to be transmitted from one language to another.
Furthermore, the press release indicates that in light of the rapid developments in translation, in particular thanks to artificial intelligence technologies, which continue to revolutionize applied languages by offering remarkable solutions in this area every day, and in harmony with its new vision and strategic orientations, the ICESCO Translation Center has been transformed into a “Translation and Publication Center”, now a programmatic entity in the same way as other departments and sectors.
Thus, the new Center will be responsible for translating works and documents, publishing work related to education, culture, science and communication, organizing scientific meetings on translation, enriching the content scientific and cultural through the publication of specialized works, and to strengthen cooperation with international publishing houses, by coordinating efforts in this area, specifies the same source.
“Although ICESCO adopted, since its creation in 1982, Arabic, English and French as official working languages, it has never neglected to open up to other languages, and translation remained its main means of transmitting its civilizational message on a global scale”, we continued, recalling that for four decades, the Translation Center has provided its services for different sectors and departments within the Organization, translating and publishing thousands of documents, studies, research and works in all its fields of action.
– How does institutional recognition, like World Translation Day, impact the translation profession?
Interview Between the Time.news Editor and an Expert in Translation Studies
Time.news Editor: Welcome, Dr. Elena Rossi, a leading expert in translation studies. It’s a pleasure to have you with us today, especially as we reflect on World Translation Day, which was celebrated on September 30th.
Dr. Elena Rossi: Thank you for having me! It’s a significant day for everyone in the field, as it emphasizes the vital role translators play in our globalized society.
Editor: Absolutely! ICESCO recently released a statement highlighting the crucial role of translators in promoting civilizational dialog and cooperation between nations. How essential do you believe translation is in facilitating these outcomes?
Dr. Rossi: Translation is fundamental. It acts as a bridge that connects cultures, allowing for the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and values. Without it, civilizational dialog would be severely limited, and misunderstandings could thrive. Translators not only convert text but also convey nuance, context, and emotion, fostering empathy and understanding.
Editor: It’s clear that translation extends beyond mere words. In the light of this year’s theme, “Translation, an art to be protected,” what are some challenges translators face today that might undermine this art?
Dr. Rossi: One of the significant challenges is the rise of machine translation and the perception that it can replace human translators. While technology can be a helpful tool, it lacks the ability to grasp cultural subtleties and the emotional weight of language. Additionally, there are economic pressures that can lead to underappreciation of professional translators, especially in areas like literature or nuanced legal translation.
Editor: That’s a poignant observation. The United Nations recognized World Translation Day through Resolution No. 71/288 in 2017. What impact do such institutional acknowledgments have on the field of translation?
Dr. Rossi: Institutional recognition brings much-needed visibility to the profession. It not only celebrates the work that translators do but also advocates for the development of better practices and policies that protect linguistic diversity. Such recognition encourages countries to invest in translation education and resources, which ultimately enriches our shared global culture.
Editor: In your opinion, what can individuals and institutions do to support the art of translation moving forward?
Dr. Rossi: First, we should promote the work of translators and recognize their contributions in various contexts—be it literary, scientific, or diplomatic. Educational institutions can help by incorporating translation studies into their curricula, fostering a new generation of professionals. On an individual level, we can raise awareness about the value of translation by supporting translated works and understanding the context behind them, which in turn aids in appreciating the diversity of human thought.
Editor: That sounds like a robust plan for supporting the field! As we embrace diversity and collaboration fostering peace and security, what is your vision for the future of translation in our increasingly interconnected world?
Dr. Rossi: I envision a future where translation is seen as an essential human skill, one that not only preserves our cultural identities but also enriches them. As global challenges continue to intensify, effective communication through translation will be crucial in resolving conflicts and building partnerships. By protecting and nurturing this art, we can help cultivate understanding, respect, and ultimately peace.
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Rossi, for such insightful perspectives on translation and its significance in today’s world. Let’s continue to advocate for its recognition and protection.
Dr. Rossi: Thank you for the opportunity to discuss this vital issue. Happy World Translation Day to everyone!
