On the 279th episode of KBS JOY’s ‘Ask Anything’ that aired on the afternoon of the 12th, Hyunjin, a member of the idol group Big Ocean, appeared as a storyteller. Hyunjin revealed his concerns, saying, “I’m a member of Big Ocean, the first hearing-impaired group in Korea, but I’m worried that I won’t be able to continue on for a long time because there are many difficulties when practicing.”

In response to Seo Jang Hoon’s question, “How did you become an idol?” Hyun Jin said, “I had cochlear implant surgery and wore an assistive device, but when I listened to artificial sounds, I felt negatively about the mechanical sound. At the time, I was learning the piano, and fortunately, the piano sounded pretty, so my voice changed in a positive way, and that’s how I became interested in music.” He added, “After that, I wanted to break the misunderstanding and prejudice about hearing impairment, so I worked as a YouTuber. While I was doing that, I appeared on a broadcast and was introduced to my current company, which is how Big Ocean came to be.”

Seo Jang-hoon asked, “How do you practice (since all the members have hearing impairments)?” and Hyun-jin surprised everyone by answering, “Since each member’s hearing level is different, the timing for recognizing the beat is different, so it was difficult to find a practice method at first. After much thought, I decided to use a vibration smart watch to receive a certain beat and recognize the beat, and I practiced while looking at a beam (light) metronome that emits light in time with the beat.”

Here, Seo Jang-hoon recalled his days as a basketball player and said, “At first, it will be difficult because you won’t have the beat, but as time goes by, you’ll have practiced countless times, so the beat will automatically be input into your body. If you practice a lot with the members, your body will remember the beat and you will start to breathe in sync with each other. Then, you can go on for a long time.” He gave some warm advice.

Hyunjin performed her debut song ‘GLOW’ with sign language, and even performed choreography using American Sign Language, receiving applause from Seo Jang-hoon and Lee Soo-geun.

Lastly, Hyunjin revealed his dream as “I want to compose a piano piece within three years and present a new style of music that contains a worldview of sound. Furthermore, my goal is to create music that contains the colors of the three of us by performing only with instruments and without lyrics under an orchestra concept.”

Meanwhile, Big Ocean, which Hyunjin is a part of, released their third digital single ‘Slow’ (Feat. Young K (DAY6)) on the 11th.
