Fresno Set to Become Home to the World’s Largest Costco

Fresno, a city in California, may soon be home to the world’s largest Costco warehouse if a development proposal is approved. The membership-only retailer has plans to build a massive 241,342-square-foot warehouse on a 22.4-acre property in Fresno’s northwest corner.

If the proposal gets the green light, the Fresno location will surpass the current largest Costco in Salt Lake City, which measures about 235,000 square feet. In comparison, the average size of Costco warehouses in the United States is 146,000 square feet.

Aside from the mammoth sales floor, the Fresno warehouse would include additional features. It would house a delivery distribution center, a 32-pump gas station, and a sizeable 4,800 square-foot drive-through car wash. These amenities are part of the thousand-plus page proposal submitted for the project.

Inside the warehouse, customers would find various departments catering to their needs. A tire center, optical exams and sales, hearing aid testing and sales, a pharmacy, food service preparation and sales, meat preparation and sales, bakery, baked goods sales, and alcohol sales would all be available.

Interestingly, a 47,000-square-foot section of the warehouse would be dedicated solely to Costco’s home delivery business. This area would be off-limits to customers, highlighting the company’s recognition of the growing demand for home deliveries.

The new Fresno facility would replace an existing Costco in the city, highlighting the retailer’s commitment to providing a larger and more modern shopping experience for its members.

Currently, the proposal is in a 45-day review period, during which the public can provide their input to Fresno’s Planning and Development Department. This feedback will be considered before a final environmental review is completed.

However, the planning official overseeing the development, Jose Valenzuela, has yet to comment on the proposal. Requests for comment from The Time.news have gone unanswered.

If approved, the world’s largest Costco in Fresno would undoubtedly be a significant addition to the city’s retail landscape. The massive warehouse, along with its various services and amenities, would likely attract shoppers from not only Fresno but also surrounding areas.
