Athens: For the first time in the world, a machine like a computer was made about 2000 years ago. This claim is being made on the basis of a device found from a ship wreck about 120 years ago. People are surprised by the discovery of this 2,000-year-old complex device, which is known as the Antikythera Mechanism and is called the ‘first computer’. It was found in a Greek ship wreck in 1901 and is constantly surprising researchers.
This hand-operated device used a wind-up mechanism to track the celestial movements of the sun, moon and planets. It also functioned as a calendar, marking the times of the moon’s phases and eclipses. It can be said that this mechanism was more advanced than any other device made over the next thousand years.

This system is in 82 pieces

According to the report, the Antikythera mechanism is currently in 82 separate pieces, with only a third of its original structure remaining, including 30 corroded bronze gearwheels. Researchers at University College London used 3D computer modeling to uncover how the device worked and called it the work of geniuses. UCL scientist Adam Wojcik said that we believe that our reconstruction fits all the evidence that scientists have obtained from the existing remains till date.

According to researchers, the device tracks the movements of the Sun, Moon and planets on concentric rings, reflecting the ancient Greek belief that these celestial bodies revolve around the Earth. Solving this complex 3D puzzle reveals connections with Babylonian astronomy, mathematics from Plato’s Academy and ancient Greek astronomical theories about the creation of celestial bodies called conjunction cycles, the scientists report.
