Up to five school cafeterias in La Rioja have informed the region’s Department of Education of the discovery this Friday of worm larvae in one of the dishes on the menu, which was removed and was not served to the students. Sources from the Riojan Government cited by the Efe agency point out that an investigation has been opened to clarify what happened and determine whether a file could be brought against the concessionaire company of the school cafeterias, Serunión.
The company has already had similar problems in the past and attributes what happened now to an “accident, probably due to high temperatures.” This was reported by a company spokesperson to Europa Press, detailing that when the monitors opened the trays they saw larvae and they were sealed “to seek traceability and know what happened.”
The situation has reached FAPA Rioja through families who have called reporting how when serving the first dish it turned out to be a “very lumpy” pasta. In some centers they have returned it directly and, in those that have tried to serve it, they have seen worms. The families, before calling FAPA, have confirmed this fact with the monitors and the center’s management, according to Europa Press.
According to the information provided by families from the affected centers to FAPA Rioja, the larvae were found in pasta dishes served in different schools in the community. These are centers that “are very separated from each other, in different locations, so we do not know if there are more or if others have realized this before serving it,” although “what we can confirm is that the children did not consume the food,” the technical secretary of the Federation, Esteban García, detailed to Efe.
This organization has been denouncing for years the lack of quality that, in its opinion, the school cafeteria menus have and demands the presence of cooks in educational centers instead of bringing food prepared from outside.
