The Azerbaijani wrestling team has won more than 80 licenses for the Olympic Games.
As reported by İdman.biz, this happened at the European Olympic qualifying tournament taking place in Baku.
In the previous seven competitions in which they participated during the years of independence, Azerbaijani wrestlers won 74 medals. The sixth license won for Paris 2024 became a total of the 80th Olympic “ticket”. This anniversary license was won by Turan Bayramov (74 kg). After that, our freestyle wrestlers, who won two qualifications, increased this number to 82.
All 5 licenses earned at the tournament in Baku are from freestyle wrestling athletes. Thus, the team got the opportunity to go to the Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 in its entirety.
Two of those who received a license for Paris 2024 are “classics”. The women’s wrestling team does not yet have licenses.
If you look at our Olympic path, starting with Atlanta 1996, freestyle wrestlers have always surpassed our other teams.
This is also reflected in the total quantity. If throughout history our freestyle wrestling team has won 45 licenses, then the Greco-Roman team received a little more than half of this figure – 27.
In women’s wrestling, which is a relatively young category, it is even lower – 10 licenses. But the two teams behind in terms of licenses could close the gap in Istanbul at the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Our wrestling teams completed 25 out of 74 qualifications with medals. That is, 34 percent of attempts were successful. Our representatives have 4 gold, 8 silver and 13 bronze awards.
Our freestyle wrestling team surpasses the other two teams in the number and quality of medals.
