Wrow, Saipem electric drone/rov that descends to 3000m depth – Science and Technology

by times news cr

(ANSA) – TRIESTE, 02 OCT – It is called “Wrov” and is an underwater drone/rov hybrid with particular characteristics: it is completely electric, with therefore a very low environmental impact, it uses artificial intelligence and can dive up to three thousand meters beneath the surface of the sea. It is the last carrier of its kind built by Sonsub (Saipem), which manufactures in Marghera (Venice), tests and trains in Trieste in the waters in front of Warehouse 23 in Porto Vecchio, and markets through the Scottish Aberdeen. This was made known by the newspaper Il Piccolo which dedicated a long article to the company’s activity, which deals with technological innovation and the marine environment by building underwater drones and mini submarines.
Using stereo-cameras, lasers and sonar, Wrow at minus 3,000 meters continues along the route even if it encounters an obstacle: it finds a solution to get around it and finds the “road” again. Its use is intended for interventions on valves, installations and maintenance of various types. A Norwegian company, Equinor, has already purchased Wrow. This is the same company that four years ago purchased two very high-tech underwater drones – Hydron-R and Hidron-W – to lower onto the Norwegian seabed and intervene in the event of inspections and maintenance of submerged equipment.
Among the latest productions there is also the “Rov”, a remote-controlled, electro-hydraulic, 250 hp vehicle, a Navy rescue vehicle to intervene on broken-down submarines.
The Rov attaches a hyperbaric chamber from above, which can carry up to 24 people, which, resting on the submarine, evacuates the crew.
Also between Trieste and Marghera, a few years ago the most technologically advanced structure was built to “plug” an underwater oil well in which all the safety valves had blown and prevent the leakage of oil and gas into the open sea. (HANDLE).
