WSJ learns of Apple’s plans to add crash detection to iPhone

Apple plans to add to iPhones and Apple Watches in 2022 the ability to automatically call emergency services if the owner of the device is involved in an accident in a car, according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing company documents and sources. According to the publication, the company tested the function for a year, based on anonymously collected data and calls to rescuers.

The built-in accelerometers will allow detecting accidents using Apple devices. The WSJ reports that, according to Apple documents, the company’s devices as part of the test identified more than 10 million accidents, 50 thousand of which ended with a call to emergency services. The company used the data on calls to improve the accuracy of identifying accidents, the newspaper said.

Apple Watch already knows how to identify possible incidents with the owner. When the watch detects a fall, it prompts you to make an emergency call; if the user doesn’t reset the notification, they do it themselves. In 2020, Apple added a feature to the iPhone that detects the possibility of a sudden fall while walking.
