Time.news – The Wuhan marathon has been postponed a few hours after the start due to the recent increase in Covid cases in China when there are only 100 days left from the start of the Beijing Winter Olympics. The Asian giant, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, has registered 50 infections in the last 24 hours, numbers that are raising concern about a possible resurgence of the virus.

The organizers of the marathon in the city that symbolizes the pandemic, scheduled for today, explained that the postponement was decided “to prevent the risk of spreading the epidemic”. More than 26,000 athletes were registered for the event, divided between the main race and the half marathon. The organizing committee has made it known that, also due to short notice, it will refund the registration fees to the competitors.

The Wuhan marathon was inaugurated in 2016 and then obtained the recognition of the International Association of Athletics Federations (Iaaf). Also in 2020 it was not disputed due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus in the country. Attention is now turned to the Beijing marathon, scheduled for next Sunday, the execution of which remains in strong doubt.
