WWE has introduced an interim women’s championship to be decided by a ladder match at SummerSlam, as reigning champion Rhea Ripley remains sidelined with a torn meniscus. Raw General Manager Adam Pearce announced the decision, confirming that Ripley will face the interim winner to unify the titles upon her return.
Injury Details and the Path to SummerSlam
The status of the WWE Women’s Championship shifted significantly following the announcement that Rhea Ripley will miss the company’s cornerstone SummerSlam event. Ripley, who sustained a torn meniscus during a match against Jade Cargill at Clash in Italy on May 31, 2026, has been unable to defend her title since early June. While she continued to participate in tag team matches in the immediate aftermath, her recovery has since necessitated an absence from in-ring competition.
In a recent update, Ripley described the physical toll of the injury, noting that she still struggles with basic mobility. I hurt my knee. I got a slight tear in my meniscus, it’s just healing,
Ripley told content creator Nina Drama, as Foxnews. She added that the recovery process remains unpredictable: I tore it in a really weird spot, so it’s kind of a little bit up in the air with just how fast my body recovers.
The Strategic Shift to an Interim Title
Rather than stripping the title from the champion, WWE management opted for a rare move in the promotion’s history: the creation of an interim championship. Raw General Manager Adam Pearce, who is acting as temporary SmackDown general manager amid Nick Aldis’ suspension, confirmed the change via social media and official broadcasts. According to CBS Sports, this marks the first time an interim title has been introduced on the main WWE roster.
The decision stands in contrast to WWE’s historical preference for vacating titles when champions are sidelined. While the company previously utilized an interim title on its developmental brand, NXT—most notably when Santos Escobar won a tournament for the interim cruiserweight title—the move to the main roster suggests a new strategy for managing high-profile absences. As Cagesideseats noted, the company needed a solution to address the title’s absence at SummerSlam, which is scheduled for August 1 and 2 in Minneapolis.
Qualifying Matches and the Road Ahead
The field for the five-woman ladder match is currently being determined through a series of qualifying bouts on Friday Night SmackDown. Recent results have already begun to narrow the list of contenders. Yahoo Sports reported that Tiffany Stratton and Jade Cargill have secured their spots in the ladder match after successful qualifying efforts.

The road to SummerSlam remains volatile, with backstage interference and disqualifications adding complexity to the qualifying process. Following a match against Nia Jax, Cargill advanced by disqualification after interference from Charlotte Flair. Pearce has already set the stage for further maneuvering, confirming that Jax will receive another opportunity to qualify against Flair in the coming week. The eventual winner of the SummerSlam ladder match will hold the interim title until a unification bout against Ripley. As Pearce stated, And when Rhea returns to competition, we find out who the one and only WWE women’s champion truly is.
