X Stability: Pew Research on Threads & Bluesky Impact

X Remains Surprisingly Resilient as Social Media Landscape Shifts, Pew Research Finds

Despite a crowded field of competitors and significant changes under its new ownership, X – formerly known as Twitter – continues to hold steady as a key platform for real-time news and conversation in the United States. A new report from the Pew Research Center reveals that 21% of American adults regularly consume content on X, a figure that has remained remarkably stable even as other platforms vie for attention.

The Staying Power of X

The Pew study, released today, highlights a surprising resilience in X’s user base. While the platform has faced scrutiny and user concerns following Elon Musk’s acquisition, it hasn’t experienced a dramatic exodus. “If X loses users, the decline is gradual and far from dramatic,” the report states, suggesting a solid foundation remains despite the ongoing evolution of the social media landscape.

This stability is particularly notable given the emergence of new text-based platforms like Threads and Bluesky. Direct comparisons reveal a significant gap in user numbers:

  • X: 21% of American adults
  • Threads: 8%
  • Bluesky: 4%
  • Social Truth: 3%

According to the report, despite initial hype, these newer platforms have yet to seriously challenge X’s dominance.

Beyond X: The Reign of Visual Platforms

The Pew Research Center’s data also underscores the continued strength of established social media giants. YouTube leads the pack with 84% usage among American adults, followed by Facebook at 71%, Instagram at 50%, TikTok at 37%, WhatsApp at 32%, Reddit at 26%, and Snapchat at 25%.

Notably, several platforms have experienced substantial growth since 2021:

  • TikTok: Increased from 21% to 37%
  • Instagram: Rose from 40% to 50%
  • WhatsApp: Grew from 23% to 32%
  • Reddit: Expanded from 18% to 26%

This growth signals a broader trend toward more visual content, short-form videos, and specialized online communities.

A Generational Divide in Social Media Habits

The report reveals a stark contrast in social media preferences between adults and adolescents. While X maintains a foothold among adults, its role is significantly diminished among younger users. After YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat are the dominant platforms for teenagers, with usage rates considerably higher than those observed in the adult population. The report suggests X plays a “marginal role” in the social media ecosystem of American adolescents.

X as the Real-Time Conversation Hub

Despite the challenges and changes, X continues to distinguish itself as the go-to platform for following breaking news, live commentary, and real-time discussions. The Pew Research Center confirms that X remains the benchmark for this type of engagement, a unique positioning that has proven difficult for competitors to replicate.

Looking ahead, the report suggests that Musk’s platform is likely to endure, while its rivals will continue to struggle to achieve critical mass. Threads may experience slow growth, Bluesky remains an emerging platform, and Mastodon is likely to remain a niche community. X, for now, remains the central hub for real-time conversation online.
