Microsoft Set to Expand Xbox Cloud Gaming with Streamable Library of Purchased Games
Microsoft is reportedly set to significantly enhance the capabilities of Xbox Cloud Gaming next month, allowing Xbox players to stream any of their purchased games.
Until now, Xbox Cloud Gaming’s streaming features have been confined to a select number of Game Pass titles. However, Microsoft has long aspired to empower players to stream any game they own. According to The Verge, this much-anticipated feature is nearing its debut.
Citing “sources familiar with [the company’s] plans”, The Verge indicates that Microsoft will enable the streaming of “thousands” of Xbox titles—beyond just those available via Game Pass—starting in November. This initiative is part of an ongoing internal project known as Project Lapland.
This feature was originally intended to launch as part of Project xCloud in 2020 but has faced delays due to the challenges associated with preparing the necessary infrastructure for thousands of games. Furthermore, while the launch appears imminent, it has been noted that “some” publishers may still withhold certain games due to licensing requirements or existing deals.
According to The Verge, the ability for players to stream any game in their Xbox library through Xbox Cloud Gaming will first roll out for Xbox Insider testing in November, before being made available to a broader audience and an expanded selection of games.
This announcement follows a recent report that Xbox games will soon be purchasable via the Xbox App on Android devices in the US, a move that complements the anticipated enhancement of Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming capabilities for mobile users.
