In an ongoing battle between Microsoft and the Xbox emulation community, a group of developers has launched a new version of “retail mode” emulators that they believe can evade Microsoft’s automatic detection and removal tools. This comes three months after Microsoft cracked down on several emulators distributed through a loophole in the Xbox Store.

The recently accessible emulators, offered by the UWeaPons Store, are made possible through the Universal Windows Platform program, which enables the distribution of generic Windows apps to Xbox consoles. By subscribing to the group’s Patreon for $2 per month, supporters gain access to “Le Bombe,” a package that can install various emulators, including Dolphin for GameCube/Wii, XBSX2.0 for PlayStation 2, Xenia for Xbox 360, and RetroArch for multiple older consoles, on a standard Xbox console.

The new distribution package is specifically designed to avoid the automated detection algorithms employed by Microsoft. Emulator developer SirMangler explains that the emulators have been consolidated into a single download, with all identifiable elements removed or masked. This makes it more challenging for Microsoft to detect the package and enforce removal. SirMangler confidently stated, “Short of Microsoft enforcing manual reviews for every upload, I can’t think of any countermeasure they could employ that I couldn’t work around.”

While acknowledging that Microsoft will eventually find out about the emulators and terminate the account, SirMangler remains positive about quickly re-uploading new versions. A new system for managing supporter’s email addresses has been implemented, streamlining the process of re-adding them to the whitelist and getting the emulators back up and running in a few hours. SirMangler believes the emulators could potentially last up to two weeks, if not longer, before removal, although it remains uncertain.

The UWeaPons Store’s effort to enable emulators on retail Xbox consoles is separate from the existing method of downloading emulators and tools in “Developer Mode.” The Xbox Emulation team will continue to provide updates for the developer versions, which do not require Patreon subscription or whitelist inclusion.

Despite the availability of developer mode emulators, SirMangler believes it’s important to challenge Microsoft’s prohibition on emulators in retail mode. He argues that retail mode is convenient for organizing games and apps in one place, and it appeals to users who want to introduce their family to emulation. Additionally, some international users may not have the necessary payment options to sign up for an individual Xbox developer account.

As of early Monday morning, nearly 600 users have already subscribed to the UWeaPons Store Patreon, surprising SirMangler with the rapid support. The emulation community eagerly awaits Microsoft’s next move in this ongoing cat-and-mouse battle, while they enjoy the convenience and accessibility offered by the new emulators on their Xbox consoles.
