Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game Physint
will now be published by Xbox after PlayStation Studios unexpectedly canceled the project in mid-June. The move expands Kojima Productions’ partnership with Microsoft beyond the horror title OD
and into film and television collaboration.
PlayStation Cancels Physint and the Search for a New Partner
The high-profile project Physint
faced an abrupt halt in mid-June when PlayStation Studios gave Kojima Productions unexpected notice that the action-espionage game was canceled.
“As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner.”

During those three months, Kojima Productions navigated negotiations across multiple fields to keep the title alive. The studio ultimately found alignment with Microsoft, securing a new publishing home for the game that Kojima describes as a genre-defining project.
Xbox Steps In to Publish Kojima Productions
For Microsoft, landing the publishing rights for Physint represents a major coup in its current gaming strategy. Discussions between Kojima and Xbox leadership had been underway for months, driven by the publisher’s push to secure ambitious AAA projects and expand its presence in Asian markets.
“Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life, We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on Physint. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox.”

The partnership builds on an existing agreement for the horror project OD, which is set to release before Physint.
Sony Steps Away While Emphasizing Decades of Cooperation
PlayStation confirmed the split through an official statement on social media, acknowledging the difficult choice to part ways with Kojima Productions on this specific initiative while praising the director’s creative vision.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision for the game. Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future.”

The pivot marks a stark departure from the PlayStation stage announcement two years prior, where PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst publicly shook Kojima’s hand and promised full support for the next-generation concept.
Expanding Beyond Games Into Film and Television
The newly expanded agreement reaches past interactive software. Microsoft and Kojima Productions confirmed plans to collaborate across film and television, exploring transmedia storytelling for broader audiences.

It is a completely new ‘Action Espionage’ for the next-generation. It will be created using cutting-edge technology and the best talents from around the world, both from film and video games. Of course this is an interactive ‘game,’ but the look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, sound, etc…

Development Timeline and Unresolved Questions
Development on Physint is ongoing under its working title, though fans may have a significant wait ahead.
While OD remains safe from recent corporate restructuring at Microsoft, the precise scope of the upcoming film and television adaptations remains unannounced. Whether the shift to Xbox alters the creative execution of the next-generation action-espionage title remains to be seen as production ramps up.
