Bad news for many Xbox owners. Microsoft has decided to implement an “all Xbox” strategy and will force its users to only equip themselves with “official” accessories, according to the specialist site Windows Central.

Several players have already seen an error message on their screen for several days when connecting accessories not developed by Microsoft, informing them that from November 12, their devices will stop working on their Xbox. “Using unauthorized accessories compromises your gaming experience. For this reason, the unauthorized accessory will be banned from use on 12/11/2023,” the message reads.

Players using, for example, unofficial controllers are therefore pushed to checkout and pay 60 euros to be able to continue playing their favorite games console. Rest assured, there are still other less expensive solutions by purchasing third-party products licensed by Microsoft, which have a security chip approved by the American firm.

The end of Cronus?

Brands like Corsair, Logitech and Razer already have the Xbox license and their devices can therefore still be used from November 12. Windows Central clarifies that wireless headsets already require a Microsoft-approved security chip to integrate wireless functionality on Xbox, and so they will all work on the console.

With this strategy, Microsoft wants to extend the possibility for manufacturers to offer “Xbox compatible” hardware after having validated the hardware itself, in particular to impose restrictions on several types of accessories which could circumvent the game or give considerable advantages and unfair to players using them. A new regulation which could in fact prevent the smartest from using the Cronus, a controller adapter used by some players to cheat in shooting games.
