Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) ordered the establishment of a strong border defense system at a Politburo meeting held ahead of the 97th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army on the 1st. It is unusual for President Xi to bring up border issues at a Politburo meeting, and some interpret this as a reference to the recent conflict between China and Taiwan, border disputes with India, and territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

Xi Jinping’s mention of the border issue seems to be a strong expression of China’s will to defend its territory both domestically and internationally. The day after Xi Jinping’s speech at the Politburo, the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army released a new video that included footage of the “Joint Lijian (Sharp Sword)-2024A” training exercise to surround Taiwan in May, in the same context.
According to Taiwan’s Lianhebo, China has actually already built about 30,000 kilometers of defensive roads, blockade facilities, and video surveillance devices along its border.
