Chinese President Xi Jinping met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit and stressed that China’s cooperation with African countries is not for personal gain.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 5th, President Xi Jinping met separately with Secretary-General Guterres in Beijing that day and said, “China attaches great importance to developing relations with Africa.”

Xi Jinping said, “China has no self-interest in cooperation with Africa,” and added, “Half a century ago, when China was going through very difficult economic times, it responded to the expectations of its African brothers by actively supporting the construction of the Tanzanian railway, creating a touching story of China-Africa friendship.”

He continued, “I hope to create a community with a shared future for mankind so that people all over the world, including Africa, can live happily,” and “I hope to strengthen cooperation with the UN to help promote peace, stability, and development in Africa.” He also expressed his hope to build a community with a shared future for mankind through the construction of the “Belt and Road” and the global development, security, and civilization initiative.

Xi Jinping stressed that the UN “practices genuine multilateralism and supports the UN playing a key role in international affairs,” and that “the principles that China has upheld in diplomacy will not change.”

He also said, “The current international situation is chaotic and the important role of the United Nations is being emphasized even more,” and urged, “We must act more actively.”

Secretary-General Guterres said, “Historically, Africa has been the main victim of colonialism,” and expressed his hope that “cooperation between China and Africa will help reduce the historical injustices that Africa has suffered and help achieve peace and development.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also reported that the UN said, “We are willing to strengthen cooperation with China to prevent acts that artificially promote division and undermine common progress, and to jointly practice multilateralism.”
