“China and the United States should become partners instead of vicious competition.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken, who was visiting China, on the 26th. At this meeting, President Xi made it clear that he would improve relations with the United States, which is in a hegemonic conflict. However, he also mentioned that cooperation is only possible if the United States does not block China’s development.

According to the official Xinhua News Agency and the British Financial Times (FT) on the 26th, President Xi met Secretary Blinken at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and said, “This year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.” He added, “Instead of vicious competition, we will resolve the differences between the two countries for mutual success.” “It must be respected,” he said. He continued, “The world is large enough for China and the United States to develop together, and China wants the United States to prosper,” and added, “The relationship between the two countries can only move forward if the United States also hopes to view China’s development positively.” Secretary Blinken also said, “The two countries have decided to hold talks on artificial intelligence (AI) within the next few weeks.”

However, President Xi added, “We have made positive progress by maintaining communication in various fields over the past few months, but many issues still remain to be resolved.”

The meeting between the two comes 10 months after Secretary Blinken’s first visit to Beijing in June of last year. Recently, the U.S. Congress passed the ‘TikTok Compulsory Sale Act’ to expel Chinese social media TikTok from the U.S. market, and U.S. President Joe Biden also ordered a three-fold increase in tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum. It received more attention than ever as the United States and the European Union (EU) were also taking issue with China’s low-priced exports due to overproduction. Analysis suggests that both President Biden, who is seeking re-election in the US presidential election in November, and President Xi, who is suffering from criticism of the economic slowdown and long-term rule, felt the need to prevent further conflict and manage the relationship between the two countries.

Looking at the photos released by the Chinese authorities, President Xi sat at the head of the table before Secretary Blinken at today’s meeting, as he did at last year’s meeting. President Xi sat at the head of the table in the middle of the table, Secretary Blinken sat at the table to the right of President Xi, and across from Secretary Blinken sat Wang Yi, Director of the Central Foreign Affairs Office of the Chinese Communist Party and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Secretary Blinken also met with Foreign Minister Wang on this day. Director Wang especially said that the Taiwan issue is a red line that should never be crossed, and insisted, “Do not send the wrong signal to Taiwanese separatist forces.” Then, Secretary Blincoln also expressed his concerns about China’s continued support of Russia, which invaded Ukraine, revealing the tight differences in views between the two countries.
