BEIJING – A meeting of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China has stated that the party congress starting next month will amend the constitution and give President Xi Jinping more powers. The most important of these is allowing Xi Jinping to run for a third term as president. With this, Xi Jinping (69) will become the person who has been in power for more than two terms after Mao Zedong.

The party has previously given the honor of being the most prominent leader only to Mao Zedong. Xi, who currently holds the posts of president, party general secretary and army commander-in-chief, is likely to be elevated to the post of chairman at the party congress. This post was previously held by Mao.

The party congress will select prominent people including the new prime minister. The current Prime Minister Li Keqiang (66) has already announced that he will step down this year. Xi will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his foreign visit this week. Xi had avoided traveling abroad for nearly two years due to Covid-19.
