Xiaomi it arrived in Spain only 4 years ago and its unusual growth, going from not existing to being number one in our country, is something worth studying in business schools. They entered with a promise, to democratize technology. And with a commitment, do it honestly. To do this, they self-imposed a limit, that their benefits never exceed between 5% and 10% of the final price of the device. With these weapons, they launched themselves into a difficult market dominated by giants, offering the same as them, but at almost half the price. The success was resounding.

At first they focused on mid-range mobiles, with prices that rarely exceeded 300 euros, although, yes, equipped with the best components on the market.

But a year ago, Xiaomi decided to take a leap, and scale its philosophy to the highest range, where only the best compete. It was a doubly risky decision, because there they were not only going to face the biggest ones, but also their own buyers, who might not understand that the firm suddenly started selling some of its much more expensive phones, never as much as those of the competition, although at prices much higher than what the Xiaomi public was used to. But the operation, again, was a resounding success, and there are the results achieved by the Xiaomi 11 to prove it.

And now, with the horizon clearer and possible doubts eliminated, Xiaomi has just presented its new 12 series, with which it intends to definitively consolidate itself in the Premium range of mobile telephony. Presented in China a few weeks ago, the new Xiaomi 12 y Xiaomi 12 Pro They now arrive in Spain.

Both terminals have a lot in common, but also notable differences, especially in size, screen, cameras and battery. The design, almost identical in the two models, stands out for its double curvature, both at the front and at the back, and for the camera module, in which the main one clearly stands out from the rest. The back is matte, which prevents annoying fingerprint marks. The dimensions are 152.70mm x 69.90mm x 8.16mm for the Xiaomi 12 and 163.60mm x 74.60mm x 8.16mm for the Xiaomi 12 Pro. The weight is 180g and 205g, respectively.

Both phones have same type of AMOLED panel with widescreen format (20:9) and a dynamic refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, although in the simplest model the screen is smaller, 6.28 inches compared to 6.67 in the 12 Pro. Both are protected against bumps and scratches by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. The Pro’s screen is also 2K (WQHD+ vs. FHD+ on the normal model), which means it has more contrast (8,000,000:1 vs. 5,000,000:1l), more brightness (up to 1,500 nits vs. 1,100 mits) and higher resolution (3200 x 1440 pixels vs. 2400 x 1080 pixels)

A camera game that promises

In the photographic section the differences become more notable. Thus, the Xiaomi 12 Pro is equipped with a latest generation triple camera, with a large 50 MP Sony IMX 707 main sensor, a 50 MP ultra wide angle and 112 degree aperture and a 50 MP telephoto lens. Thanks to the larger 2.44μm 4-in-1 pixel combination technology, the main camera is capable of capturing up to 120% more light compared to previous Xiaomi 11s. To complement this impressive hardware, the device also It is equipped with the advanced AI algorithm, which allows professional special effects to be applied and offers options such as Xiaomi ProFocus, which always keeps the focus on the subject, even if it moves. As for video, the terminal can record in 8K quality and the Ultra Night Video system offers, according to the company, spectacular results in low light conditions, with various portrait modes, allowing users to capture studio-quality shots. .

The front camera of the 12 Pro is 32 MP, it also uses larger pixels (1.4 nanometers) combining 4 in 1, and is capable of recording 4K videos and selfies in Night Mode.

In the basic Xiaomi 12, however, the photographic system is not so ambitious. And although we have a 50 MP main sensor (this time the Sony IMX 766) that can also record in 8K and retains the ProFocus and Ultra Night Video systems, the accompanying ultra wide angle remains at 13 MP, and the third sensor is a 5 MP ‘tele macro’. The front camera, however, is exactly the same as the Pro model.

with four speakers

Another aspect that Xiaomi has not wanted to neglect is the sound. In both cases, the audio system is guaranteed to have been calibrated and adapted by Harman Kardon. But the Pro version clearly stands out, since it incorporates a quadruple speaker (two woofers and two tweeters) compared to the two classic ones that the basic version mounts.

Power in abundance in both models

Where Xiaomi has not wanted to skimp, and has done more than well, is in the processor, which in both the 12 and the 12 Pro is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the same one that incorporates a good number of high-end mobiles this year. Manufactured with 4-nanometer technology, the chip quadruples the Artificial Intelligence capabilities, doubles the power, and saves up to 25% more battery power than the previous generation. The RAM memory is 8 GB in the Xiaomi 12 and 12 GB in the Xiaomi 12 Pro, although both offer the possibility of adding 3 GB more virtually. In storage capacity, we find 128 and 256 GB, respectively.

120W fast charge

As for the battery, the biggest differences are in fast charging, because despite the different screen sizes, which is what consumes the most energy, the milliamps are practically the same (4,500 for the 12 and 4,600 for the Pro). , which favors in this case the basic model, smaller. The 12 Pro, on the other hand, offers an impressive 120W fast charge, which is reduced by 50W with wireless charging and 10W with reverse charging, which allows us to transfer power from the phone to other devices such as headphones or watches. In the basic model, fast charging (with cable) remains at 67W (still more than that offered by many other high-end terminals) while wireless and reverse charging are exactly the same. In all cases, the chargers are included in the box.

And let’s go now to the prices, which although higher than those that Xiaomi usually has, are still significantly cheaper than those of its competition: from $749 for the Xiaomi 12, depending on the version chosen, and from $999 for the Pro model.
