Xiaomi, Anthropic and OpenAI release AI models amid market volatility

Global artificial intelligence markets experienced intense volatility on September 22, as major technology companies across Beijing and San Francisco unleashed a rapid wave of model releases, driving down API prices and intensifying industry-wide pressure known as model fatigue.

Engineering teams at Xiaomi live-streamed training tests for their new MiMo-V2.6 model in Beijing on September 22. Simultaneously in San Francisco, Anthropic released its flagship Opus 5.5 model, while OpenAI introduced two new systems, GPT-6 Sol and Luna, just an hour later according to reported global AI releases and coverage by the South China Morning Post. This dense cluster of deployments illustrates an environment where companies upgrade systems so rapidly that individual breakthroughs struggle to capture sustained attention.

OpenAI added GPT-6 Astra on July 3, while a subsequent window between July 8 and July 16 saw xAI launch Grok 4.5, OpenAI introduce GPT-5.6, Meta release Muse Spark 1.1, and Moonshot AI deploy Kimi K3.

Model Fatigue Impacts Developers in China

Global technology spending continues to climb alongside these product launches, yet this rapid expansion has exacted a toll on developers and enterprise customers alike.

Rui Ma, a technology analyst and founder of the Tech Buzz China newsletter, noted via Vneconomy that the intensity of model fatigue in China may actually surpass that in the United States. Enterprise users in the United States primarily weigh whether minor performance gains justify the switching costs of adopting a new model. In China, however, the burden falls heavier on developers as continuous releases trigger brutal price competition as reported by market analysts, with every new generation establishing a lower price floor.

Lionel Sim said, In China, fatigue is tied to the economic equation, according to Vnexpress.

Sim added via Vneconomy that customers increasingly respond only to true leaps in capability or substantial price cuts, making minor upgrades difficult to notice. Leia Wang, a non-resident scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, observed that Chinese users are particularly price-sensitive, which complicates building brand loyalty since the model layer is the least cohesive. Chinese developers have slashed application programming interface fees to stay competitive.

Global Developer Adoption Trends

Chinese AI models are rapidly expanding their presence on major developer platforms, with enterprise usage share exceeding 50% in 2026 according to platform statistics reported by CNBC on September 26. Vercel observed a similar jump, rising from 11% in January to 55% in August.

Peter Walker, head of OpenRouter insights, noted that open-source Chinese releases have reached a threshold where they can handle complex agentic AI tasks, particularly in coding, while maintaining lower costs than comparable American models. Harpreet Arora, head of agent infrastructure at Vercel, noted that Chinese model performance has risen to handle more work at lower costs, leaving price differences as a deciding factor when quality meets requirements, though enterprises still prioritize advanced American models for highly complex tasks. This global spread has drawn scrutiny in Washington, where two House committees are investigating the widespread adoption of these systems alongside export controls on advanced semiconductors, concerns that firms may remotely access Nvidia chips via overseas data centers, and the use of model distillation techniques to narrow technology gaps. OpenRouter reported that usage growth spiked highest among countries categorized as the Global South, where businesses across 82 nations in Central and South America, Africa, and Asia dedicated 67% of their token usage to Chinese models. Daniel Rampley, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), noted that Southeast Asia could see sharp adoption gains due to economic ties and expanding digital infrastructure.
