Xodus Project Works to Enable Local PC Game Pass Support for Linux and macOS

Linux and macOS users have long faced a stubborn barrier when trying to access Microsoft’s subscription library. While platforms like Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store established varying degrees of native or compatibility-layer support, the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass remained strictly tethered to Windows. For years, workarounds were limited to cloud streaming via Xbox Cloud Gaming, which introduces latency and requires a higher-tier Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

That dynamic shifted when independent contributors and developers behind the open-source Opensourceforu released the Xodus project. Reverse-Engineering Microsoft Runtimes to Bypass Windows Restrictions

The core challenge of bringing Xbox titles to alternative operating systems lies in Microsoft’s proprietary Game Development Kit (GDK) runtime. These frameworks inherently restrict game execution to Windows environments. To break past these hurdles, the Xodus team utilizes Valve’s Proton—a custom Wine fork—alongside reverse-engineered runtimes such as xgameruntime.dll.

By dissecting the underlying architecture, the development team has cleared several critical technical hurdles. The team figured out authorisation and game downloads during the initial build phase.

Current Milestones and Operational Capabilities

Significant progress has already been recorded in authenticating user profiles and parsing digital libraries. The project successfully implemented Microsoft and Xbox Live authentication using the Rust-based xal-rs library. This integration allows the software to verify user account permissions, acquire game licenses, pull package downloads, and decrypt local MSIXVC files.

Despite these strides, complete end-to-end game execution remains under heavy construction. Contributors are actively rebuilding the Xbox Gaming Runtime service layers and writing specialized Wine patches to bridge the remaining gaps.

Scope Limitations and Target Formats

While the project opens up exciting possibilities for handheld gaming PCs and desktop Linux rigs, the software targets a specific architectural subset of Microsoft’s catalog. Xodus focuses exclusively on games utilizing Microsoft’s newer GDK and MSIXVC file formats.

Older applications built on the legacy Universal Windows Platform (UWP)—such as titles released during the Windows 8 and early Windows 10 eras like Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War 4—are not currently planned for support. This technological boundary means users will need to verify whether specific library titles rely on the modern runtime environment as development continues.

The Road Ahead for Open-Source Compatibility

If the Xodus contributors successfully bridge the gap between package decryption and active game rendering, it represents a massive leap forward for portable Linux hardware. For communities surrounding devices like Steam Deck, local execution removes the bandwidth and subscription barriers inherent in cloud-only play.
