People’s Artist Xuan Bac passed 4 universities and won beauty contests twice
People’s Artist Xuan Bac Born in Phu Tho, from a young age he had very good academic achievements. The male artist studied at Hoa Binh Primary School, middle school at Ly Tu Trong Secondary School and high school at Viet Tri Industrial High School – formerly known as the Complementary Cultural School, both studying and working.
As shared by People’s Artist Xuan Bac In Weekend Appointment, after finishing high school, he took the university entrance exam and passed four universities at the same time. Although at that time, nearly 30 years ago, passing the university entrance exam was very rare, the male artist passed the entrance exam to many prestigious schools at the same time.
The male artist once said that he first received news that he passed the Hanoi University of Culture and passed the salutatorian exam at that time. Artist Xuan Bac He used to want to become a lawyer, but then decided to choose the University of Theater and Cinema (Hanoi). Xuan Bac chose to study acting because of his love for art and his desire to become famous.
He went through many difficulties during his student days like his other classmates. “Every month, I am given 350,000 VND to spend on food, toothpaste, soap, friends’ birthdays… I don’t spend anything other than food,” artist Xuan Bac said.
Even though he was talented and passionate, at that time he always felt out of place because he was a small-town boy and not a “family member”. However, People’s Artist Xuan Bac still impressed his teachers thanks to his ability to… do odd jobs like imitating animal sounds. But those are just the achievements that the audience hears a lot about and knows a lot about People’s Artist Xuan Bac. In addition to his remarkable academic achievements, the male artist also won 2 beauty pageant awards.
Specifically, in his 11th grade year, Xuan Bac “conquered” the Elegant Student contest and won the first prize in the entire school and was sent to the entire Phu Tho province-level contest. At the provincial competition, although there were many strong opponents, Xuan Bac still won the second prize because of his intelligence and bright appearance.

Sharing about that year’s contest, Xuan Bac once said that on the day he competed in the school’s Elegant Boys contest, he had to borrow clothes, a bow tie from his friend, a watch from his brother, and to powder his sister’s Swallow. He also wore a ring made of coconut, bought when he went to Hung Temple.
People’s Artist Xuan Bac is not a “child of good family” and can choose his own career path
Talking about his only son who is an artist, People’s Artist Xuan Bac’s father once said: “I have 5 children, all of them are precious and loved, but Xuan Bac is the most precious because he is a writer and artist like his father. Bac’s brothers have the middle name Nhat like me, but Bac’s middle name is Xuan just for fun.”
The male artist’s father said that when Xuan Bac passed 4 universities, he told his son that “which school and major you choose is up to you. Any school or major is fine as long as you study well.”
“At that time, becoming an actor was still something difficult for many people. I told my parents, I want to become famous,” the male artist recalled.

Xuan Bac’s father said that at that time, many families in the countryside understood the difficulties and hardships of raising their children to go to university. “If you don’t come back, you’ll miss it, but when you do, you’ll worry about bringing your friends home and not having enough food to feed them. If you can raise a pig, you’ll sell it for this job, or if you can raise a chicken, you’ll sell it for that job. One time, Xuan Bac came back.” home, my parents gave me money. People’s Artist Xuan Bac once shared that his father was like a “guideline” for him and his siblings. He respects his children’s decisions. In his current small family, artist Xuan Bac does not have any specific direction for his children to follow.

Editor: You have an impressive academic background, having passed entrance exams for four universities nearly 30 years ago. Can you take us back to that time and describe what motivated you to pursue higher education?
Xuan Bac: Certainly! At that time, passing university entrance exams was a significant achievement. I was very motivated by my passion for knowledge and a desire to pursue a successful career. Although I initially wanted to become a lawyer, my love for the arts eventually led me to choose the University of Theater and Cinema.
Editor: It’s fascinating how your interests shifted. You had to overcome challenges during your student days as well. Would you mind sharing a bit about that experience?
Xuan Bac: Ah, yes. Like any other student, I faced financial constraints. My monthly allowance was just 350,000 VND, which I had to stretch for food and necessities. Looking back, those challenges made me appreciate my education and the path I chose even more.
Editor: It sounds like those experiences shaped who you are today. Speaking of challenges, you also participated in beauty contests as a student. What was that like?
Xuan Bac: (laughs) That was quite an adventure! I remember borrowing clothes and accessories for the competition. In my 11th grade, I won first place in my school’s Elegant Student contest, which led me to compete at the provincial level. It was both nerve-wracking and thrilling.
Editor: Winning those contests must have boosted your confidence. How did your family support you through your journey?
Xuan Bac: My family was incredibly supportive. My father always emphasized the importance of education. He would say, “You can choose any discipline so long as you study well.” His encouragement allowed me to pursue my passion without feeling that I had to conform to societal expectations.
Editor: It seems that your father played a pivotal role in your life! Now that you’re a People’s Artist, how do you reflect on your journey from a small-town boy to an acclaimed actor?
Xuan Bac: It’s been quite a journey! I often felt out of place at first, being a small-town boy among city dwellers. But my passion for acting fueled my determination. I’m proud of my accomplishments and how far I’ve come, but I always remember the roots that shaped me.
