The lucky winners are officially known. The staff of the XV of France unveiled this Wednesday morning the list of 42 players selected to launch the preparation for the World Cup in France (September 8 – October 28). A group that will meet from July 2 in Monaco for the first summer camp under the direction of coach Fabien Galthié.

As indicated on Tuesday by Le Parisien-Today in France, the latter decided to bring the rear of La Rochelle Brice Dulin and the scrum half of Toulon Baptiste Serin in the Principality. The two men, who have not worn the tricolor jersey since receiving Scotland in March 2021 in the Six Nations Tournament, benefit from their experience and their very good end to the club season.

Another ghost, the three-quarter center of Montpellier Arthur Vincent. The 23-year-old is coming out of two almost white seasons due to repeated injuries, but enjoys a high rating in the minds of the Blues staff. The 2022 French champion with the Héraultais will now have to show that his physique can keep pace with preparation for a World Cup.

Meafou injured and absent, Lebel and Delbouis not retained

Fabien Galthié has also decided to summon, as expected, two great hopes of French rugby. The center Emilien Gailleton, best scorer of tries of the season with Pau at only 19 years old, is there, just like the back or winger of Bordeaux-Bègles Louis Bielle-Biarrey (20 years old). The two young players had not been selected for the U20 World Cup for this preparation.

Among the absentees, there are of course the injured like Anthony Jelonch, Sipili Falatea, Gaëtan Barlot and Yacouba Camara. The second row of Australian origin Emmanuel Meafou was hit on Saturday during the Top 14 final between his club Toulouse and La Rochelle and is away from the field for almost two months. In addition, the massive player does not yet have his French passport, and World Rugby has still not decided on his eligibility with the XV of France for this World Cup.

But there are also those absent by choice. We think of Stade Toulousain winger Matthis Lebel, regularly called up but outstripped in the home stretch by the return of Gabin Villière and the hatching of Bielle-Biarrey. Or even at the center three-quarters of the Stade Français Julien Delbouis.

Note that this list of 42 is subject to change, since the staff reserves the right to bring elements out and in according to the injuries and misshapenness of each other. But for those absent by choice, it already draws a first hierarchy against them. The list of 33 selected for the World Cup will be announced on August 21, before the last of four preparation matches against Australia.
