The President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet (Renaissance) deplored the practice of “parliamentary obstruction” on Friday and intends to raise the subject with the various political groups during a meeting on Tuesday, she explained to The voice of the North the day after a stormy session at the Palais Bourbon.

Thursday evening, the debates escalated during the examination of an LFI text for the reintegration of caregivers not vaccinated against Covid-19, with a multiplication of amendments from the presidential camp to prevent a vote before the end of the session. .

“A very negation of the debate”

Asked about the subject, Ms. Braun-Pivet generally regretted the practice of parliamentary filibuster to slow down the debates. “The obstruction is still the very negation of the debate”, she judged, in a video posted online by The voice of the North.

“Some MPs will tell you that obstruction is a right, (…) one of the ways parliamentarians have of opposing a text. I do not share. I consider that it is necessary to debate on the merits and that one should not use procedural techniques of obstruction to finally avoid the debate on the merits”, she underlined.

The leader of the rebellious deputies Mathilde Panot wrote to Ms. Braun-Pivet to castigate the obstruction against the LFI text on the reintegration of caregivers whose examination could not be completed. Ms. Panot accused the government of having “taken its full part” in “this little game”. The obstruction, “this will also be part of the subjects that I will discuss with the group presidents next week”, assured Ms. Braun-Pivet.

A meeting on the pace of work of the Assembly

“Are we able to define common rules or best practices that will allow us to work better together? It’s a real subject, “said the President of the Assembly, mentioning the obstruction against the pension reform at the start of 2020 with “thousands and thousands of amendments” this time from LFI.

Ms. Braun-Pivet is organizing a meeting Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. with the presidents of the various parliamentary groups to discuss the pace of work in the Assembly, which has been exhausting since the June legislative elections which deprived the Macronists of an absolute majority.

The subject of “the inflation of night sittings” will be discussed and everyone will be able to present their “tracks” to change things, according to a parliamentary source.
