“Yandex” called the timing of the emergence of an unmanned taxi in Moscow

Yandex is now waiting for permission to publicly test an unmanned taxi on public roads in Moscow, the government will make a decision on this issue within a few weeks, said the head of the company Tigran Khudaverdyan in an interview with RBC. In September, the company announced plans to begin testing an unmanned taxi in the Yasenevo area of Moscow.

When asked why it took so long to make a decision, Khudaverdyan replied that in this case we are talking about the admission to the road of a car, which will not be driven by anyone. The safety of this technology is especially important at any given time, he explained. “Therefore, we are both careful and generally respectful when the regulator treats it in the same way, that is, puts safety and common sense at the top,” he said.

In September last year, Yandex separated the direction of unmanned vehicles into a separate company, Yandex Self-Driving Group (Yandex SDG). Previously, this direction was part of a joint venture between Yandex and Uber – Yandex.Taxi, 38% of which belonged to Uber.

Yandex’s drones are based on Hyundai Sonata. During the year, the company brought about 100 such cars to public roads in Russia and the United States, part of the fleet is intended for the service of unmanned taxis in Innopolis (Tatarstan).
