Yandex courier robots can start working in Dubai

by time news

Yandex intends to use courier robots to deliver food in Dubai. Sergey Kirillov, director of business development for unmanned technologies of the company, spoke about this at the international exhibition GITEX.

“We want to start deliveries in Dubai as our assessment showed that a third of the city is suitable for [передвижения] such robots “, – reports the edition of The National, the words of Kirillov. The manager added that the operation of delivery robots is 15-20% cheaper than the labor of couriers.

The six-wheeled robot-courier “Yandex” with a height of about half a meter is capable of transporting small loads weighing up to 20 kg. The total power of such a robot is 1.5 kW, the declared speed is 8 km / h in pedestrian areas, and delivery is made within 3 km. Rovers know how to determine the color of traffic lights and navigate intersections.

According to Kirillov, Yandex’s autonomous courier robots deliver about 500 orders a day in Russia and the United States. In June, the Russian company entered into an agreement with the American service Grubhub for the delivery of food on US campuses, and in August the first “rovers” began work at Ohio State University. In March 2021, Yandex announced plans to launch such robots in Israel and South Korea.

Dubai plans to make 25% of trips unmanned by 2030. Now, together with SkyTran, a string transport system is being developed (unmanned cars moving along rail tracks that are raised above the ground on concrete supports). Autonomous taxis will start operating in the city from 2023 (by 2030, 4000 Origin unmanned shuttles will join the traditional taxi fleet).
