As psychiatrist Yang Jae-woong apologized for the patient death that occurred at the hospital he ran, the bereaved family criticized the hospital for belatedly playing with the media.

According to the Bucheon Wonmi Police Station in Gyeonggi Province on the 30th, at around 3:30 am on May 27th, a woman in her 30s, Ms. A, died at a hospital in Bucheon run by Mr. Yang.

Person A was hospitalized for treatment of addiction to diet pills containing narcotic ingredients.

CCTV footage shows Mr. A knocking on the door of a private hospital room while holding his stomach, and then a nurse and a caregiver entering, administering a tranquilizer, and tying his hands, feet, and chest to the bed.

After two hours of being tied up, Mr. A developed a swollen stomach and nosebleed. The nurses simply untied him and did nothing else, and he eventually died.

The staff, who discovered that Mr. A was unconscious, checked his pulse and massaged his hands and feet for five minutes before attempting CPR. They used the defibrillator about 20 minutes later.

The hospital explained that it was difficult to suspect intestinal obstruction because patient A suffered from chronic constipation and did not continuously complain of abdominal pain, and that there were no problems with the response on the day of the accident.

The National Institute of Scientific Investigation conducted an autopsy on Mr. A’s body and relayed to the police its opinion that “it is presumed that he died from pseudo-intestinal obstruction.”

When the CCTV footage was released and the hospital’s response became controversial, the day before, Mr. Yang stated through his agency Mystic Story, “I and the entire medical staff cannot hide our heartbreaking feelings regarding the incident that occurred during the hospitalization process, and we sincerely apologize to the bereaved family who are grieving the loss of the deceased and their family.”

He said, “Not only I, as the hospital director, but all medical staff will cooperate with the investigation as much as possible and faithfully participate, and we will take responsibility according to the medical and legal judgments made accordingly.”

In an interview with Hankyoreh, Mr. A’s mother expressed her anger, saying, “Even though she knew the bereaved family’s phone number, she never apologized or came out in front of them, and instead spoke through a lawyer. Now that this incident has been reported in the media, she is belatedly engaging in media play.”

He added, “This is a person who didn’t even glance at me as he passed by when I was protesting in front of the hospital yesterday morning,” and “This is not a sincere apology at all, so I cannot accept it.”

Mr. A’s bereaved family filed a complaint with the police last month against six medical staff members, including Mr. Yang, on charges of abandonment resulting in death and professional negligence resulting in death.
