Yankees’ offseason unclear as GM Cashman hints at potential player moves
New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner promised “big changes” this offseason, but the team’s roster remains untouched as the offseason gets underway. With Steinbrenner’s cryptic comments in mind, it’s unclear what changes could be coming for the Yankees.
While the Yankees are still in a state of uncertainty, it’s possible that some players could be on the trading block. Among those players are Clarke Schmidt, Michael King, Kyle Higashioka, and Everson Pereira, all of whom have the potential to be moved during the offseason.
Schmidt, a capable big-league starting pitcher, could be a valuable asset for the Yankees. As a 2017 first-round pick, Schmidt has shown promise and will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason, making him an attractive trade chip.
King, who had a strong performance as a starter towards the end of last season, has garnered hype and could be a sought-after player for other teams. With a relatively low cost and the potential to secure another piece for the Yankees, King’s future with the team remains uncertain.
Higashioka, a catcher, may also see his time with the Yankees come to an end. With six catchers on the team’s 40-man roster, Higashioka’s playing time has been limited, and the Yankees may be looking to move him to make room for other prospects.
Pereira, a 22-year-old outfielder, is another player who could be traded by the Yankees. With the potential to be a top prospect, Pereira’s talent may be attractive to other teams, especially if the Yankees decide to bring in a full-time left fielder.
As the offseason progresses, the Yankees will have to make decisions on which players to keep and which to potentially trade in order to make the necessary changes promised by Steinbrenner earlier in the offseason. With the possibility of upgrades and changes on the horizon, the Yankees’ roster could look very different by the time the new season arrives.
