Freedom. The General Directorate of Civil Protection has declared a Yellow Alert in the coastal area of ​​the country, due to higher and faster waves, authorities reported.

This Sunday, the waves have affected large tourist areas in La Libertad, leaving material damage, as shown in some images circulating on social networks.

Authorities, for example, reported damage to the La Libertad pier, which has been temporarily closed while cleaning actions are carried out. Damage is also reported in restaurants in the El Tunco area.

The faster and higher waves are due to “extra tropical storms in the southern hemisphere off Antarctica,” sources from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) said. Waves are expected to reach up to 60 kilometers per hour in some sectors (typical height is 35 kilometers per hour) and the height would reach 1.7 meters (typical height, 1.5 meters).

The Yellow Alert means that the municipal Civil Protection commissions of the 29 coastal municipalities of the country must be activated, and the departmental commissions that have a coastal zone, such as Ahuachapán, Sonsonate, La Libertad, La Paz, San Vicente, Usulután, San Miguel and La Union.

The owners of ranches and private restaurants located on the shore of the beach are requested to report on this phenomenon and give recommendations to their clients to avoid negative consequences to the safety and lives of people.
