Yellow Warning Issued for Skagerrak, Kattegatt, and Baltic Sea Due to Low Pressure – SMHI Updates

Yellow warnings issued for multiple sea areas in Sweden

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued yellow warnings for several sea areas in Sweden. The warnings apply to the Skagerrak, Kattegatt, Bälten, Öresund, and the southern and southwestern Baltic Sea.

According to Emma Härenstam, a meteorologist at SMHI, the warnings are due to a low pressure system currently located between the British Isles and Iceland, which is heading towards Sweden. As a result, wind speeds are expected to increase over these waters, with gusts of up to 17 meters per second. This could potentially pose problems for leisure boats and smaller commercial vessels.

“In connection with the low pressure, we also have some rain moving in from the east tomorrow morning,” said Härenstam.

In addition to the yellow warnings for the sea areas, SMHI had previously issued a yellow warning for high flows in southern Scania. However, Härenstam reassured that the low pressure system is temporary and is expected to subside by Sunday afternoon and evening.

“It is very temporary. We have a high pressure over the country right now that is holding up against the low pressure,” Härenstam added.

As such, while the warnings are in place, it is important for individuals, especially those out at sea, to exercise caution and stay updated on the latest weather conditions.
